½ cup margarine
1 egg
2 cups warm water
2 tablespoons yeast
5 cups flour
1 tablespoon salt
1 egg
2 cups warm water
2 tablespoons yeast
5 cups flour
1 tablespoon salt
Cream sugar, butter, and egg together. Add yeast, dissolved in warm water. Beat flour and salt in with large spoon. Do not mix with hands. Let rise and roll out. Bake in moderate oven (375 degrees) about 15 minutes.
Notes: Can use Bosch. Dissolve yeast in water with sugar. When that has activated, add the rest of the ingredients and mix until the flour is mixed in. Let it rise then roll out and let rise again. Then bake as directed above. The dough is very sticky so I usually add a little more flour than what is called for (approximately 6 – 6-1/2 cups but add a little bit at a time to be sure).
Other Variations: This recipe can be used for either bread or rolls. For fan rolls, roll out the dough and spread melted butter all over the top. Then cut into 6 strips and stack them. Then cut them crosswise about 1 ½ inches apart and put them into greased muffin tins to cook.
Makes 36 rolls.
